But seriously I think you may have misunderstood some of JJ's comments with respect to the issues you raised above. JJ did not represent that the configuration ( ie; long hose, consoles ) are optional. He was addressing the question someone asked about using exsisting gear and he offered that to the extent that a diver insisted on diving in an alternative configuration that they should atleast do what they can to streamline it.
He did also add that a 7' hose is optional in the open ocean, as we have said often on this list. You could just as easily use a 5' hose and then he went on to detail the reasons why, most notably the manuverability options in an OOA scenario.
