I don't quite understand why this wet steel pro and con has become an issue. As I've posted, I dove wet steel 72's without a BC (because they hadn't been invented yet) from '64 to '68, then wet steel 72 doubles with a horse collar from '68 to '86. And everyone else was diving roughly the same type rig. I wish some vets like myself would jump in here and ask the same question.
I shall hazard a personal answer. Back then, much of our diving was serandipitous: deal with problems only if and when they arise, based on our training and experience. Today, the emphasis is to pre-plan each and every dive down to the minutest details of depth, time, and sea condition, anticipating any and all potential mishaps regardless how remote the chance of them occuring. So serandipity is out and rigid pre-dive planning is in. Are we on the same page?
