Geez - people need to lighten up. Even on this
simple matter there is lots of sniping going on.

Ask any photographer if they use breath control to
fine tune their buoyancy. I do it all the time to
hover just over something. Ideally, you inhale as
you push down, look, and exhale as your positive buoyancy
pulls you away.

As for breathing in general, I think it's best when
you don't even think about doing it. Natural is good,
and efficient.
