Anybody who thinks you can really learn to be a safe diver in one open water course is endangering their lungs. With the 4-dive wonders that all the major certifying agencies now endorse, I strongly suggest budgeting the $500 for two courses back to back: OW1 and AOW. Then, if you want to be a good buddy, take Rescue which chould follow in close order for another $200. Save your dimes til you can afford all 3. Rent gear until you have paid the tuition.

P/S when I certified with NAUI 25 years ago we did 6 open water dives and 2 freedives, plus countless pool dives. I am told that since then, NAUI has adopted the PADI 4-dive format, as has SSI.
