in the OW course, since you need that anyway for california
diving. Were you in the Bay Area, I could direct you
to a couple places with two weekends of checkouts. One
actually issues both cards (in my case, I never did
receive an OW card, only an AOW one).
Rescue can be done right away (and with NAUI, you don't
even need to do AOW), but I think it might be best after
you've done 4 weekends of diving without instructors to
watch over you.
