Same fish, different name?

One of the most confusing things for me during my fish identification education has been the existence of multiple names for a single fish species . . . . at least when not referring to latin names. My current question is this: Are there seperate species of fish described as Kelp Bass and Calico Bass? Or, are they the same fish described differently depending on their age? I did a dive last weekend at the south east tip of San Clemente Island. It was beautiful! We were looking for a cave in 90'. We didn't find the cave. But we found the wreck of a sportfisher (approx. 35 ft.?) in 110'. It was a beautiful weekend, no?
