you might easily forget that you even have a camera with you. Don't underestimate the stunning effect of such an encounter.

Just as an example, I did a fish count dive recently off Santa Cruz Island. I always carry my little Ikelite 3e with me, just in case...
Anyway, I was looking out for new species that I had not noticed yet when I saw schools of fish fleeing in all directions but one. I suspensefullyu looked into this direction from where the threat had to be coming--to see the weirdest sight I had ever seen underwater: a cormorant swimming by, hunting for fish. His head stretched out, his body gray, appearing naked, moving past me like an alien space ship. I was so surprised and awe-struck that I just watched and didn't even THINK of pointing my camera. Only later, back on the boat, did I ask myself why. Well, surprise is a strong factor.
