one of my buddies saw a cormorant at what he said was 90 fsw in Redondo Canyon a few years back at the begining of squid season. The Galapagos are a good place to see birds under the water as well. There, the penguins fly underwater in formation that reminds one of a squadron of fighter planes the way they bank and turn and glide with their short stubby wings.

As far as missing the action when something big shows up unexpectedly, i have yet to do that anywhere on the four corners of the planet, although, perhaps a 21 foot great white could in theory change that, one's skills get honed as a photographer, climber or paintball player. Sometimes a little too honed, and the pure joy of the experience takes a back seat to getting the @$%^@$# thing on film.
