"the only reason i have a backup reg (and why
i had an in-line octo before) was so that i could
share air under necessary circumstances when i
was not travelling w/a pony. so, no redundancy
there, but at least there was an extra reg. i just figure that it will be less dangerous for
me if i hand off a redundant air supply to a
buddy who needs it rather than have them hanging
on me or pulling my reg up w/them, so on and so
forth."

It sounds like you have things worked out, sort of. If your diving with a buddy you need an extra reg unless you are planning to buddy breath. I can't imagine an OOA situation where your buddy swims over to you and is going to wait for you to unstage this pony and send them on their merry way, this is not realistic. First you should be monitoring your buddies air and yours. If your buddy swims up to you out of air you are going to give up your primary and go for your backup, unless you told the buddy to go directly for the octo or pony. Forget passing off this pony idea, not enough time IMO. I feel you have a false sense of security thinking up can just pass of this pony and away goes to problem. Practice OOA's with your buddy so you'll both know the plan.
