A lot of people here use backplates, as you can tell, and I am considering switching to that at some point, but for now I really like the Balance. No cummerbund, lightweight, fairly streamlined, trim weight system works well. I've traveled a bunch with it and it travels well. Under water, you can't tell you have it on.
Would be better with a crotch strap, as it tends to ride up when inverted at depth.
Only drawback is a small pocket, but that just causes you to economize.
If you can, try backplates and see if you like them. If not, the Balance is a good rig if you like that.
