Questions:
Has your wife been tested for PFO or pulmonary shunt? Has she had a pulmonary function test-designed to detect obstruction or restriction?
How about the infection? Did she have any symptoms of infection prior to the incident? If not, I wonder if the elevated white cell count could have been related to complement activation resulting from the AGE, not the other way around.
I assume your wife will want to resume diving when she resolves and, if no other obvious causes present themselves, she might want to have the above tests.
