Just to add to the point that Kevin made, if a small shred of teflon tape gets into your hose or your first stage, it could cause the regulator to malfunction, and possibly cease the flow of air to the second stage......

More than likely, it would cause the regulator to freeflow by becoming lodged somewhere it is not supposed to be, but again you would be running the risk of regulator malfunction.
