Get a nice ocean going kayak like a cobra tourer or expedition and a fish finder so you can see the bottom topo and dive anything out of the way between Corona Del Mar and Dana Pt. Also Palos Verdes, Malibu and Santa Barbara are nice. Stay away from popular beach dives because you'll get the impression divers are ruining the ocean but by going to less accessible areas you'll see it's not true. Oh yeah, obey all fish and game laws and don't believe the DIR hype machine, it's most important to be in shape rather than have a certain gear config or buddy.
