You wrote that the expanded area of the mask allows for added CO2 buildup. Even though my experience is limited I feel that the air flow around the internal area of the mask is designed at elimiante any stagnant air and it does it so well that you don't even need anti-fog. That's my opinion and observation of this system. So if I have somehow misled you with this statement, prove me wrong.
It is also my opinion that dives in water as cold as 30 degrees requires special equipment. A full face mask equal to what the Navy or commercial divers/search rescue teams use would be something to look into, as Kevin is doing. I also think that mammalian diving reflex could hinder the dive if he doesn't use a FFM.
