we get them around here rather frequently, especially off the oil rigs. They tend to be rather small here in the temperate regions, with most seeming to be around a meter in size.
Both of my encounters were on the surface. One was in February of '99 and the other was in Sept of '00, a short distance from shore at Redondo Bch. They are docile and don't seem prone to fleeing.
Tulamben, in Bali, Indonesia seems to be a good place to find the larger individuals judging from the reports of other divers. They seem to be somewhat larger in the tropics.
