Your friend is mistaken. The Halcyon rig is designed and assembled by divers. The straps are not crossed because it's easier to get out of the straps when they aren't crossed. Crossing the straps creates a more snug fit, but being snug isn't necessarily a good thing. A rig too snug is harder to get out of. Using a quick release is not the right answer. A rig too snug can make breathing more difficult, though this problem is typically caused by a chest strap as seen in the DiveRite and OMS rigs. Bad solution to a non-existent problem. The shoulder straps on the Halcyon rig should be loose enough to allow you to fit three fingers together between the shoulder and strap. There is no chest strap on the rig. Tighter than that isn't neccessary.
