Losing your mask underwater is a real possiblity and a hazardous one. I bring a spare on my dives, maybe that's overkill but it's my choice. I used to carry it the Ranger BC pocket but that's gone so now it's in my dry suit pocket. During my Naui training I had lots of mask skills. On one drill we knelt in the pool in a circle and passed each others mask around and around and did clearing skills. He also taught us how to create a bubble with your two hands cupped around the eyes in order to see, I wasn't too good at it. That's a tough skill to master. The instructor told us about a Sea Lion at Crescent that likes to steal masks so he prepared us for that possibility.
