I see your point, but the advent of photography did not kill painting, only relegate it to an artform that only those who cared about it would use or buy.
Digital photography has come far enough that I'm ready to acquire digital gear to augment my film gear, but there are still things that can be done in either medium that can't be done in both. Film's demise is not yet here, it has only become unfashionably slow in a fast paced world.
