DESCO was making built in "gators" on their old canvas suits back in the '50s & '60s.
They also used laces on the back of the hoods to assure a tight face seal.
Viking has had a combo "gator/ankle weight" rig where you can wear them alone or slip strips of lead into them.
Lots of the "new" stuff has been around for many years.
