I'm thinking an easy way to tell how much volume a reg can move is to free flow each reg and see how long it takes to drain identically filled tanks.

As for the upside down breathing almost all regs will get a little wet since the exaust valves are in a position to allow water to come back in. It'd be like trying to clear your mask by craking the seal on your forehead and not under your nose. Depending on how the exhaust is angled it may be more or less susceptible.
