AVALON, September 3— Authorities resumed their search Monday for a scuba diver missing in waters off Catalina Island, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

Monday’s search began at sunrise and involved crews of a Coast Guard helicopter and cutter, said Coast Guard Lt. Paul Markland.

The missing diver, a 62-year-old man, was last seen about 10:30 a.m. Sunday in about 120 feet of water, said Markland.

The search began about 20 minutes after a 35-year-old man among the same group of divers was pulled from the water unconscious, said Ed Pickett, a county fire dispatch supervisor.

The younger diver, Daniel Schedore of Chandler, Ariz., was taken to a Catalina hospital, where he was recovering in a hyperbaric chamber, Pickett said.

Coast Guard crews teamed up Sunday with Los Angeles County lifeguards and firefighters to search for the missing diver, who was last seen ascending toward the surface, but failed to make it to the top, Pickett said.

The Coast Guard crews reported searching 470 nautical square miles, which is slightly less than the size of Orange County, according to a statement.

Crews suspended their search about 8 p.m. Sunday due to darkness, the Coast Guard said in the statement.
