Jason, Training and experience were the first things I listed. Having the right equipment is part of a safer dive. I dove Farnsworth on single 72's in the 70's and 80's but I would not do it now (it's not enough gas if you get in trouble, almost all the problems have to do with divers running out of gas). I like my doubles, it feels good to know you have the right gas supply (it's not a good feeling to have to sip your gas to try make it last longer). The line reel will save your butt on a bad vis day. The lift bag and line reel gives you something to deco off of (if you can't find the line).
