I always try to dive with a bigger tank than my buddy, so that there is a built in reserve into the buddy system. Most people dive with alum 80s, whereas I have H/P 120s, 100s or double 80s.

I dont know too many OWSIs who emphasize that when one buddy gets into air trouble, then if they have the same size tanks on, both will probably be in air trouble pretty quick too.

There is not a lot of time to waste.

If indeed "THEY" the divers dont get it, it is because "YOU" the instructors dont teach it.

There is another obvious solution to this running out of air simultaneously problem: (1) be totally self sufficient when you go into the water and/or (2) dive solo, without the hazard of a dependent buddy.
