the major physical requirement to be a Coastie that i know of is that you have to be at least 6 feet tall. that way, since they never steam into water deeper than 5 feet, you can wade home if the boat sinks.
[for the record, they probably dont call it "steaming" since they dont have nuclear reactors on their boats. they have diesel engines. i dont know what they call it in proper C.G. parliance. diesel-ing??]
they sure have beautiful aluminum surf boats in the Coast Guard. most of them are unsinkable, even if rolled over by the breaking surf.
although it never hurts to be safe rather than sorry. that seems to be their theme.
