There are some glass-filled nylon buckles on the market that are incredibly tough. Problem is, the buckles pretty much all look alike & the best way to tell them apart is to examine the ashes for glass fibers after they're burned.
Some guys use a 4 lb hammer for testing, which works ok sometimes. After you're done testing, just go ahead & replace 'em with SS, preferably with a solid pin running all the way through on the hinge.
SS holds up fine in burn tests & gets rid of that nasty shine.
