PADI is falling down on the job then because I had no such requirement in timed swimming for my DM and AI stuff. The point is not that it is a 'super hero' test but that standards are routinely exceeded by the gue instructors and I think you'll have to agree that doing laps in 25 yard pool (or even 50 m pool) is much easier (and faster) than in an environment that has you swimming against current and around moving tubers, canoes, divers and other swimmers as well as potential hydrilla entanglement. Naui sounds like it has its stuff together but I would like to see how many people actually go non cert bc of that 450 yd swim (I'm assuming it is without fins and mask). Many swimmers (Masters and Triathletes) forget how difficult it is for non swimmers to maintain pace and fluidity for even half that distance.
