Not to rain on anyone's parade, but NAUI requires < 10 minutes for a 450 yard swim for leadership positions. PADI isn't that different on this one either, though you could swim slower if you did one of the other tests faster.
Competitive triathletes do the quarter mile in under 6. Pro triathletes and masters swimmers under 5. I'm still slow in the swim - 7 mins for the quarter, a bit over 30 for the mile.
Sounds like the rest of the class far exceeded the norm.
