I imagine that most of the Brits (who consider deco diving recreational) continue to manage with only air. That's why I have a hard time accepting the notion that air is worthless. It's not. It's merely less effective than other choices.

I think helium will take off at the same time CCRs do, since then you can do rather long dives on the right mix without shelling out $100 to feed more helium into the atmosphere. Instead a 6 or 13' tank of the preferred gas, along with one of O2 would suffice.
