It does help and I can tell by your response, you are not the extremist your original posts could have implied.
I must admit I haven't a clue as to the extent open water courses are taught these days, but I do believe you when you say they have been watered down significantly since I took them. It probably does explain what I've seen diving and I don't mean from the wildlife.
I had great instructors who all have helped me avoid any type of dive related accident in the 30 years plus I have been diving. It's too bad the same level of instruction in the open water class doesn't exist today.
Even with the instruction, I still think the #1 reason I have avoided a mishap is because I have dove responsibly and within the limits.
