Remember, we're talking about beach diving, Wayne. Your need to be, as you call it weighted for the end of the dive so's you can hang at a safety stop with an mt tank might be okay on the boat trip. Your safety stop while beach diving Laguna is the swim back up hill at the end of the dive. I could possibly agree with being "slightly negative" at full exhale in the pool, factoring in the higher density of cold sea water to make up buoyancy. Same with the reg in mouth. I just don't see using air that I don't need for the actual dive especially using air for plowing thru the surface.
