I had a buddy that left me at the start of a three dive day trip. He begged me to take him out and show him around Anacapa, as he had never been there. I tracked him down, he took off again. This happened twice more, before I said to he## with him. Back on the boat when I confronted him, he said that once he got in the water, he felt comfortable, and decide to go alone. This was NEVER discussed as part of the days diving, and we had talked several times in the 2 weeks before going out. I did the second dive solo, and on the third dive, a newby asked me to take him around, as his partner didn't want to make the last dive. We talked, checked each others gear, and he followed. The other guys asked me to go with him a couple of times, I've always said NO. Other people asked me about him, and I've told them he isn't a "buddy" diver.
