We need to focus on why buddy teams do not behave like buddy teams. When we enter the water with another diver as "buddies", we have taken on certain responsibilities. These responsibilities necessitate planning, communication and committment. All too often the "buddies" are really "solo near another solo diver" while wrongly thinking that they are "safe with a buddy".
That would explain alot of the animosity for the buddy system. It is considered a poor excuse for safety, because it is done usually wrong.
We will never have all of us diving in coordinated groups, but we sure can improve the performance of the teams that make up most of the diving done here. Teaching ourselves how to be a better buddy seems a significant way to improve dive safety and pleasure for a very large portion of the dive community.
