Check the archives. There was a lot of discussion, even some facts, about this before you started on this board. In particular, see the thread from mid-October 2000 on topic.

Seems to me arguing whether a death was a solo death or one which occured during a failure of the buddy system is really missing the point. I agree that a buddy team that doesn't stick together is a failure. So what? Either you're team diving or not. If you can't help your teammate for whatever reason (separation, incompetence, poor viz, whatever) you're not buddy diving. People do die in functioning buddy teams (e.g. Rudy Pearison, Wayne Durx) but the sad fact is, regardless of whether they went into the water with someone, many divers die alone. Why not focus on why buddy teams get separated or can't help each other rather than some loaded notion of what a solo or buddy dive is?
