i suppose one could say that about the Navy Seal training or those who attempt to summit Everest; that their attempt or instruction or guiding was mediocre?? I was under the impression that most failed in terms of the *physically* demanding aspect of dealing with mask floods, navigating /w/o mask for however many feet etc etc. The academic part is easy enough, but gettin a nose & two eyes full of 48 degree water and then swimming along while buddy breathing and maintaining perfect buoyancy and trim....that, to the best of my knowledge is the sort of thing responsible for the attrition.

Also, a 35 to 60% failure rate is common for college level biology courses in say, a pre-med program, and it doesnt matter how good the instructor is, some students just don't have the wherewithal to handle the material.
