See http://www.garlic.com/~triblet/swell/gps.html
for lots of information. Scroll past the dive
site descriptions at the top.

There's more detail on WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation
System) on that page, but in short it improves
accuracy from 30-45' to 3-7'. Don't buy a
differential receiver -- WAAS does the job just
fine, maybe better, on the water.

I would look at Garmin and Standard. You can pay
anywhere from $99 to $2000 depending on screen
size and features. For a brick and mortar store,
West Marine. On the web: http://www.tvnav.com/navhome.html

You probably want a charting GPS that will display
a map with your position on it. MUCH easier to
use.

Use your GPS routinely so you know it backwards
and forwards. That way, when the day comes that
the fog clamps down, you can concentrate on
driving the boat, not on learning to use the GPS.
