There are a lot of religious arguments about
various pieces of dive gear, particularly fins
and snorkles.
Wet suits: you have a trade off between soft
'n stretchy vs. warm. You can tell the difference
by squeezing. I've gone dry, but if I had to buy
a cold water wetsuit, I'd probably get a ScubaPro
SemiDry today, though there are somethings I don't
like about them. A hooded vest will be lots
warmer than just a hood.
Masks: get what fits, but not a real cheap one.
Fins: Generally: split fins are easier swimming,
less maneuverable.
Snorkel: For SCUBA, I don't carry one. If I did,
it would be a simple basic tube, no valves (point
of failure), no flex (feels like the inflator
hose).
