We bought tiny shorty wetsuits for the kids at Dive & Surf's "sale trailer" hidden at the Redondo store. Then we let them romp at the beach.

As they were girls, hot pink worked just fine. What happened was that we could see the kids in a crowd of kids and they floated. They thought it was just cool to have suits like the surfers and the parents, but the piece of mind for us was terrific. Even after they were pretty good beach swimmers, we encouraged them to wear wet suits or at least rash guards. If I am sitting on the beach watching the kids, I can readily ID mine as they move up and down the beach in the current.
