you can be silent, you can get right on top of (or come up underneath) a big skittish yellowtail. In some cases, it seems that the bugs don't notice you as much. Free diving with a camera will get you pictures that are virtually impossible to get on scuba.
Of course, try getting a frame-filling macro shot of a blue banded goby without scuba. Both ways of being in the water have their plusses and minuses, and freediving brings with it a whole different set of dangers.
