I think I'm a bit luckier than some of you folks, but I'm notoriously
forgetful. I tend to forget gloves, but have repeatedly had my dives
saved by people to whom I am eternally grateful.
The other thing I used to forget a lot was my weight belt. I'd go
with my friend Dan to Pidgin Point and find I had no weightbelt. Luckily,
this was when I only used about 24 pounds anyway, so I would find flat
rocks to put between my Farmer John and jacket. Hey, I'd get to make
the dive, though perhaps it happened more often than it should
have.
Many years back I went with a friend of my sisters to a boat at
Port Hueneme. It was raining torrentially and we were late, but the
trip was canceled anyway. The interesting thing though was that
apparently the folks that got there in time heard some calls for help
and found some guy holding on to the pier pilings at water level. He
was lucky, cuz it was storming. I thik he probably was well fixed with
anti-freeze though.
Would you believe that the Golden Dabloon made a trip to San Nicolus
Island on a really calm day? Eddie Tanaka was the captain then and on
the way back he said that he now remembered why he didn't go to Nic.
He didn't have the fuel to make it back. We limped back on one engine
and got to dock after 11.
I'm still trying to figure out a dive that went really south. We drove
to La Boufadora to dive in a hurricane, but that wasn't interesting.
I've gotten blasted by waves, but... Now I've gotten seriously blasted
by waves and currents on the North Coast, but that's just a normal day.
We almost lost a car at Greyhound Rock. The guy that pulled the truck
out just a bit before the waves pulled it in, made sure to get pictures
first. He said he had some good shots of waves breaking on the hood of
a station wagon.
Hmmm. Johnney tried to spear me a couple of times and almost killed me
another way...
I guess I've been careful enough to just get lucky... I love Wayne's
story about the wrong wetsuit though.
Enjoy, seahunt
