Isla Mujeres is a great place. Good diving is a little offshore between the Isla and Cancun. Most diving is done at Manchones. I'd strive to get further out there are quite a few excellent reefs that do not get their due credit . Here is a location of a good map of sites http://www.mantadivers.com/page5.html. Just a caution on night diving in the area. Currents can be very strong and flying along at High speed at night can be challenging.
Response to Cancun must have some attraction to some. I've been going there for fifteen years and I have not come close to doing it all!
The Mayan Riviera is tremendous I love Xcaret.
