You answered your own question: A nitrox trained diver would've not have done so as they are a better trained diver, Then a basic open water diver. If a nitrox diver planed to do a deep dive he or she would have the proper mix. As I am a nitrox diver I use nitrox on all dives except beach dive. I dive deep at times and use a mix anywere from 32% for a dive down to 125 and mixes as low as 24% for those deep dives to 175. So the question is "was he a nitrox diver and if so what mix did he have". If he had a mix of say 30% he would defenitly have been able to do that dive with know problems. And yes and no 32% at 140 can be done but not advisalbe for a short time you would just be raising your PPO2 level but any deeper at 32% yes he could go into confultion at depth and die.
