"Although several divers in the group are accomplished freedivers who can hold their breaths close to 2 mins in the poolside breathhold drill, it seems that once you have to recover your mask, snorkel, and fins underwater, psychology interferes."

What exactly do you have to do on a breathhold? Descend to X depth, pick your gear off the bottom and swim it back up? Or something more? Just curious.

Task-loading at depth for sure compromises your breathhold time. My breathhold when freediving and taking pictures is about half the time I can do floating face down in the water, and a quarter to a third of the time I can do on a sofa in the living room.
