I first could not believe it when another diver told me how to swim through kelp: backwards, slowly swimming through it. The amazing thing is that the kelp will not entangle with you or your regulator or other gear but it will slip by like an oily snake. Try it yourself to believe it.

This will work perfectly on patches of kelp but not necessarily on dense, vast canopees because then you may get problems with your fins. You'd get those problems anyway if you swam through it face down.
