i don't know about naui, but padi requires you to make 3 beach dives. on is just to snorkel and get use to the surf and surge, and the other two dives are to do the required skills you learned or should've learned in the pool. my beach dives took place at shaw's cove in laguna beach on a 2-3 foot day and was quite fun. i enjoy bodysurfing too, so to me jumping into the surf was no big deal. but to people that aren't used to the surf, this could be quite the frightening experience for them. glad to hear your bud only lost gear and not his life. dive safe and often...
