I have over 300 rebreather dives.

Turning off the O2 or Nitrox (not air) would cause
the O2 level to go down (which is obviously bad),
not the CO2 level to go up (the CO2 scrubber would
still be in the loop and functional).

Instructors should NOT dive a rebreather with students
for (at least) two reasons:

1. The students should see the instructor diving the
same sort of rig they are diving.

2. A paniced OOA student is very likely to grab the
hose out of the instructor's mouth, which will
flood the loop, and then you have TWO divers
with a major problem.
