First these guys are more than a mile in. I do not know how much of that distance is full of water, but it might be a long way to swim.

Second there are thousands of gallons flowing from the area where they broke though. This means the swim would be very much an upcurrent activity.

Finally, if you came into their area as a diver, how would you get them out? They are not divers and taking these tired, hypothermic guys for a long, fast swim does not seem the best way to save them.
