Safety stops were used? Were safety stops discussed?

I was certified through a large chain store when it was Naui. No Casino Point dives, only beach and boat dives. The class had to prove skills at 60' depth. Remove weight belt an replace, don and doff BC, mask remove and replace, regulator retrieval, etc. Not every diver got certified at the same point in time. It seemed the instructor was not in a hurry to certify and would do remedial work until he felt you were ready. Some never made it.
