When's kosher to dive Little Corona?

I got tossed out of Little Corona (Newport Beach) a couple weeks ago right on my little neoprene-clad ear, as, said the lifeguard, scuba divers aren't allowed when there are swimmers present. Fair enough. We make them jealous, I'm sure.

I'd always dived there at night or in the winter and was therefore surprised to hear of the prohibition.

Now: Can anyone tell me, please (1) when the site is and is NOT guarded and (2) where to find the applicable rules? (No points awarded for telling me to go read the signs on the beach.)

I'm looking for a nice, relaxing just-before-sunset beach dive tonight. My gear and I are presently in Irvine.

Thanks.
