I dove for 20+ years without a computer, and just started using one 5 years ago. It's a nice convenience, and I would recommend getting one, but I still use the tables as well. (I dive with reference to my computer, but I have the table bottom time number in the back of my mind as a guide.) We were on a boat in Bermuda last month operated by Fantasea Divers, and although most of the patrons were using computers, the DM still read off a conservative recommended max bottom times based on the tables prior to each dive. The max bottom time was not mandatory, it was just a general recommendation. This struck me as a prudent practice.
