When it is lake Pacific conditions, you can keep your fins off.
With any significant surf, you want them on and walk in backwards (unless you are a lucky Force Fin owner, then you are privileged to walk in forward--just kidding). Anyway, you don't want to either let a big wave rip your fins out of your hands or tumble you without fins on.
I agree that walking without fins is so much easier, but it may easily become a serious matter between life and death. Not kidding.
